Cuyahoga Problem Gambling Coalition (CPGC) 5 Part Training Series
Part 1: Convergence of Gambling & Gaming – How the internet can affect youth’s behavior
Description: More than 215 million people of all ages and identities in the U.S. reported they play videogames regularly.  As we have more people engaged in gaming, game design has shifted to a monetization model as there has been an immense growth in gambling mechanics purposely included within videogames across all platforms. In this workshop, we will discuss how gaming, gambling, and internet use intersect to affect youth’s behaviors towards higher engagement for problematic use. Knowing how gaming can convert from leisure to problematic by understanding the many intentional factors and intersections between gaming, gambling, and internet use can aid those working with youth to prevent disordered levels of behavior.

This convergence of gaming and gambling is being fueled by the growing accessibility of the internet and youth are at the forefront of consistent exposure to this. While many can enjoy video games without developing any consequences, there are a proportion of those who stray from responsible levels of play, to areas of problematic play. Those who often progress to problematic gaming get to a point where several areas of their lives are impacted in a negative way. This workshop will identify points where prevention work can be targeted prior to youth’s behavior developing into problematic gaming.

One of the challenges for those working with youth can be their engagement with the internet. As the use of the internet is a part of youth’s daily living for activities such as school, work, communication, entertainment, or leisure, we now have unregulated persuasive technology that targets youth as consumers of a monetized gaming model. Identifying and understanding how persuasive technology design impacts youth’s behaviors can aid professionals to provide education on this topic to individuals, families, and communities they work with.

Objectives

  • Foster awareness of the facts and clinical features of gaming disorder and the continuum of problematic behaviors.
  • Describe the psychological, physiological, social, and environmental issues and beliefs associated with gaming and gambling disorder.
  • Develop awareness of the convergence with gaming and gambling including game design elements, monetization models, and common gambling mechanics intentionally included within video games across all platforms.
  • Identify co-occurring mental health issues to be aware of and valid screening and assessment measures to assess for gaming & gambling disorder.
Instructions:

  1. Watch the video.
  2. Complete the post-test and evaluation via ProProf.
  3. Upon completing and passing the post-test, your CEU certificate will automatically be generated.
