ages 3 to 18

HALO Program

Healthy Alternatives for Little Ones (HALO) is a 12-unit holistic health and substance abuse prevention curriculum for children ages 3-6. HALO is designed to address risk and protective factors for substance abuse and other health behaviors by providing children with information on healthy choices.

Learning objective: Help children understand the complexities of “health” and “healthy choices”
Setting: Early childhood classrooms in local schools and community settings in Cuyahoga County

Lions Quest

Lions Quest is a comprehensive, evidence-based social and emotional learning program for pre-K through 5th grade classrooms. This program supports, encourages and celebrates diversity.

Learning objective: Create a learning environment based on the needs of all students in an environment in which no one is an outsider because everyone is needed, valued and important
Format: Students work together to learn concepts, practice thinking and social skills and discover the benefits of cooperating toward mutual goals
Lessons: Based on the five SEL Core Competencies from CASEL

LifeSkills Training

A school-based program that aims to prevent alcohol, tobacco and marijuana use as well as violence, LifeSkills Training (LST) focuses on the major social and psychological factors that promote the initiation of substance use and other risky behaviors.

Format: Discussion, structured group activities and role-playing scenarios
Options: Separate LST programs offered for elementary school (grades 3-6) and high school (grades 9-12)

Project SUCCESS

Project SUCCESS (Schools Using Coordinated Community Efforts to Strengthen Students) is designed to prevent and reduce substance use among students 12-18 years of age.

Age range: Offered in middle school, high school and community settings across Cuyahoga County
Format: 8-session class
Learning objectives:

  • Teach students to identify and resist pressures to use substances
  • Correct misperceptions about the prevalence and acceptability of substance use
  • Understand the consequences of substance use

Casey’s Kids

Casey’s Kids is a youth-led prevention program.

Age range: Middle and high school students
Learning objectives:

  • Learn alcohol and drug prevention skills as well as leadership skills
  • Promote prevention among peers

Sources of Strength

Sources of Strength is a best-practice youth suicide prevention program that harnesses the power of peer social networks to change unhealthy norms and culture, ultimately preventing suicide, bullying and substance abuse.

Learning objectives:

  • Learn help-seeking behaviors
  • Promote connections between peers and caring adults.

adolescents to adults

An evidence-based education program for people who have experienced a negative consequence as a result of their alcohol and/or drug use but do not meet the criteria for abuse or dependence.

A foundational prevention program that educates participants on the risk factors associated with gambling. Adaptable to school, work, or community and criminal justice settings.

parents

Our Active Parenting program teaches parents to raise empowered youth who are less vulnerable to drug and alcohol use. Active Parenting complies with the Department of Child and Family Services Standards.

Cost: Free
Format: Meet twice weekly (two-hour sessions) for four weeks
Objectives:

  • Improve relationships with their children
  • Develop new parenting skills
  • Identify effective techniques for navigating family transitions
